The gift of Mangalgiri

The name of the Mangalgiri Sarees is derived from its native town Mangalgiri, situated in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The town is renowned for its beautiful sarees and pilgrim destinations like Lord Panakala Narasimha Swamy temple.

Origin of this artistic lineage

Since ancient times, Mangalgiri has been popular for its pilgrimages. According to the local people, the Lord Panakala Narasimha Swamy temple has been present in the town since Satya Yuga, and below it is the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in which Yudhistra himself installed the idol. It is believed that the pilgrims after paying obeisance to the lord purchased a saree which eventually grew as a livelihood for the local weavers.
